Costagrande and its old villages
The name itself explains its position. It is located on a ridge starting from St. Brigida hill and ending with the highest tops of Muretto and Montagetta mountains. Costagrande depends on Pinerolo
Town Hall while the religious life is connected with St. Pietro Val Lemina
Church. Till the middle of 1900 it was inhabited by about 70 families, all living on agriculture.
With the industrial era the agricultural activities lost importance. Young people found work in the local manufactory firms leaving the agricultural work to old people. The buildings have been rebuilt and embellished becoming, thanks to the distance from Pinerolo and its easy access, second houses, resting and relaxing locations. Coming from Pinerolo to Costragrande direction you can meet many inhabited home groups. After Villa Facta (an old master’s house) you can find the Pilone della donna Morta (dead woman’s pillar), the Falfrč village and other smaller home groups. The Gerbido place with the St. Defendente
Chapel you meet on the way to Rustichel direction, is a typical and characteristic corner of this area. This
Chapel was built after the Second World War where the former St. Maria Maddalena chapel was built in 1609 on a site where some Waldensian people found refuge and protection during the persecutions time. There were found some antique human remains. In the past, this
Chapel was also called Gerbido or Gierbo Church. The area offers nice and quite landscape, pleasant walks in the chestnut, beech and fir woods and several fresh fountains. All area is dominated by Muretto Freidour mountain which divides the Lemina and Noce valleys. On the Muretto pick there is a little
Chapel from which you can have an overview on St. Pietro, Talucco, Roletto, Frossasco and Cantalupa villages and , on the clearest days, on Torino city.
